Life & Work with Jay Monday of Phoenix / Scottsdale

Life & Work with Jay Monday of Phoenix / Scottsdale
Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Monday.
Hi Jay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I’ve always been a hands-on learner. In high school I did plumbing and construction. I worked on cars for fun. Figured things out that other people couldn’t. After high school I joined the military and I love it because everything was hands on. After I left the military, I got back into plumbing and air-conditioning. It’s been 26 years and I’ve been working with my hands, using my ingenuity and creating AC and plumbing masterpieces. Modern artwork for you to enjoy every day when you come home.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Life in general is like swimming upstream, but you have two choices in life. Andy Dufresne in Shawshank redemption said it best “get busy living or get busy dying.” No matter what life throws at me, I just keep pushing forward. This motto has enabled me to be successful in every facet of my life from being a leader in the military to building HVAC & plumbing companies and finally owning my own.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Let me tell you a story. As a kid in high school I was very motivated, not only to learn about things but to make money. I would work evenings and weekends doing landscaping for the company that my mom ran. I swear every single day these landscapers would intentionally hit the main waterline. We would have to stop what we’re doing, turn water off, dig up the waterline and that would halt production.
At the time, I didn’t realize how much money this costed or how it affected a company‘s bottom line, but I did know it did because it stressed my mom out. Now, she’s not the owner taking the loss, but she’s responsible for generating a profit and minimizing costs.
We would have to call a plumbing company, they would come out charge us a lot of money to repair it and then we would have to go back out and complete the job. I asked my mom, “don’t we have anybody to do this?” You know the answer of course, no you have to go to school for plumbing. We felt stuck, paying an absorbent amount of money to pay a tradesmen to fix something that didn’t take that long to fix.
Now this was way before we had YouTube, people actually had to go to school in order to learn how to do a trade. No YouTube doctors in my time. I was determined, though! I went to Home Depot, I talked to a retired plumber, who was now working there for extra income. Picked his brain about how to fix copper waterlines. How to solder and what was needed to do the job. Then I got this bright idea! Let me buy enough copper that I can build my mom‘s name out of copper and then fill it up with water so she can see that it holds water and doesn’t leak. This wasn’t an easy task, I bought all the right tools. I ended up going back to Home Depot to talk to that retired plumber 2 times. Also had to buy additional materials because I had to figure out how to get water from the hose bib to my cool sign.
My project was completed! To my surprise it was beautiful. My mom’s name was stenciled in copper. I took my artwork to the shop, I connected the hose to my hose bib using a cool little hose bib adapter. Turned the water on so I had full pressure, then I went inside to brag about my abilities. Anxiously, I waited for my mom to finish up so that she could go outside and see what all the excitement was about. That moment finally came and I watched her eyes light up. Confused or surprised she asked me where I got this and I told her I made it. She was blown away, that’s when I told her mom let me make this next repair. Didn’t take long for our guys to hit another waterline, she had them clear the waterline and when I got out of school, I headed out with my tools & some parts. It took me a little longer than that other plumber, but I got it done and it was beautiful. I have to say it was cleaner than the plumber’s work I had experienced. I guess that’s where my OCD comes in. Lol. From that point forward, I made those plumbing repairs. I learned how to install back flow prevention valves, hose bibs and misting systems.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?

I’m very loquacious so it’s probably difficult for people to be surprised to find out something about me. However, it does happen. My motto is to live life to the fullest so I travel as much as I can, I love to experience different cultures. I love to eat, learn and I love to build things with my hands. Everywhere I go I make friends so of course everywhere I go I know somebody. I would have to say that one of the surprises that comes up most for people is when we are traveling I always run into somebody I know and the company I’m with is like who are you? Are you the mayor because you know everybody.
